Privacy Policy
ScheduleMan is a course planning tool provided free of charge by The Tartan for use by the Carnegie Mellon community (the "Service"). This policy describes the types of personal information we may collect and how we use it to provide the ScheduleMan service.
Information We Collect
Account Information:: When you register for the Service, we will request some personal information, including your name, email address, username, and password to create your account. Your password will be stored on our system in an encrypted form.
Schedule Contents: The contents of your ScheduleMan account are stored and maintained on the server in order to provide the Service. Information relating to your account, such as the courses that you have added to your schedule, will be retained so that you may retrieve previous schedules, and so that we can assemble aggregate statistics such as course popularity. Because we keep back-up copies of data for the purposes of recovery from errors or system failure, residual copies of account contents may remain on our systems for some time, even after you have deleted information or after the termination of your account. We will not access the contents of any account unless you specifically request us to do so (for example, to assist with technical difficulties) or if required by law, to maintain our system, or to protect The Tartan or the public.
Usage: The Tartan may collect information about the use of your account, such as how much storage you are using, how often you log in and other information related to your registration and use of the Service. When you use the Service, we collect certain information contained in the "header" of your HTTP request to the server. This information includes the type of browser you used, your screen resolution, Internet Protocol address, and the date and time of the request. We use this information to ensure stability and security, and to improve the performance and usability, of the Service.
Marketing: The Tartan will not sell, rent or share your personal information with any third parties for marketing purposes without your express permission. However, aggregate demographic data may be provided to third parties.
Cookies: A cookie is a small data file that is sent to your computer when you first visit a website. Our cookies contain an identification number that is unique to the computer you are using but that is not related back to your account. This identifier allows us to store session information, such as the courses you are currently considering. This information is not retained longer than the lifetime of the cookie, which expires when you close your browser (or after 4 weeks if you choose to be remembered during login). If you set your browser so that it refuses cookies, you will not be able to use the Service.
How We May Contact You
From time to time, The Tartan may send you information related to your account or the Service. This may include, but is not limited to, updates to the Terms of Use or this Privacy Policy, new feature announcements, or important notifications. Because such information is important, you may not opt-out of receiving it without termination of your account.
Transfer of Information
We reserve the right to transfer your personal information in the event of a transfer of ownership of The Tartan or ScheduleMan, such as acquisition by or merger with another company. In such an event, The Tartan will notify you before information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Updating Your Information
You can change your account settings at any time in the "My Account" section at the top of every page while logged into the Service.
You can terminate your account at any time, by emailing online@thetartan.org. You should be aware that residual copies of information may remain stored on our systems even after the deletion of information or the termination of your account.
